about

Don't be too flattered when someone writes a song about you - creativity is an essentially selfish pursuit.

lyrics

He scribbles in the corner of a smoky, crowded room
when suddenly, beside him, she steps out of the gloom
He tells her he’s a poet and poets need regret
She grins and tells him, “Baby, you’re lucky that we met!

“Cos I could be your tragedy
“I could light that fuse
“I could give you such agony,
“I’ll give you something you can use!”

Well he drops his little notebook and leaves it where it lies
skewered on her beauty and the madness in her eyes
His heart begins to tumble, his head begins to spin
he says, “Whatever you were thinking, you can count me in!

“Cos you could be my fantasy
“You could be my muse,
“You could give me such ecstasy
“You’ll give me something I can use!”

But he can’t see signals she is sending, got his head in the sand
He thinks he’s in for a happy ending - where’s the poetry in that?

Well she ties him to the bedpost and cuts him till he bleeds
And she drags him round the country like a dog upon a lead
But then as quickly as she came there he wakes to find her gone
And now he howls at her absence in the murky early dawn

“You have caused me such misery,
“Cruelty and abuse,
“You have crushed my humanity,
“But gave me something I can use!”

Now he curses her existence and he murders her in rhyme
but though she dies in every poem, she lives in every line.
